Andrew Duncanson – California Trap – Run It Back Records 25001 – Duncanson’s Astounding Voice Drips With Soul, Blues, And R&B Perfection
Now, here’s something to get very, very excited about! I am an unapologetic fan of the Kilborn Alley Blues Band and The Dig 3 (their two full-length releases remain two of the best of the 2020s), and one of the most essential cogs in those sterling outfits is Andre Duncanson and his ever-so-pleasing-and-soulful voice and guitar proficiencies. This is Duncanson’s first time stepping out in front on his own release, and from track one to track 13, the blues, soul, and R&B on offer is sterling and exceedingly satisfying. Recorded at Kid Andersen’s San Jose, California-based Greaseland Studios and produced by saxophonist, harmonica player, and singer Michael Peloquin (co-producer with Kid Andersen), this is a delicious meld of the three aforementioned styles. This exceptional outing abounds with supportive arrangements, including great horns, keyboards, and backing vocals by an astounding alliance of musicians who fully understood and subscribed to Duncanson’s musical visions. Kid Andersen’s top-shelf guitar work, Jim Pugh’s organ and piano efforts, and Peloquin’s saxophone snakings deserve high praise, as really, all who participate here do. Oh, those horns and supporting vocals; wow! At the front of all the proceedings is Duncanson’s extraordinary singing, with his staggering range, passion, and dynamics very difficult to praise to the degree they should be; they are astounding! To be released on March 28th, California Trap is likewise to-date the best collection of 2025; it’s a tie! The “major” blues labels should take notice of the lofty proficiencies here! Bravo to all involved! And, to Duncanson, your voice is an amazing instrument. Duncanson’s vocal expressions are some of the best out there right now. Period. Thank you! And, bravo! Standing ovation, everyone!
